Blogging is not as easy as maybe one would think, but when you are pushed in the right direction by the right people, it may gradually shift from being frightening to a rather enjoyable activity, as I feel is happening with me at the moment.
As I have previously wrote, I am currently studying MSc Public Relations at the University of South Wales and have been enjoying the course since February this year. Our course leader, Dr Michael Parsons, is constantly upgrading out masters experience by arranging guest lectures with respected PR professionals on various topics. This Thursday we have a privilege to listen to Richard Bailey - a public relations educator, author and editor of PRPlace.com - one of the first blogs to be created regarding the public relations profession back in 2001.
Richard was actually talking to us through a video chat - our lecture rooms all have cameras so these kinds of interactions are rather frequent with different guests and clients. This made all of us pay more attention to the screen and what he was saying. We started by launching a few questions to Richard regarding his beginnings with blogging and later continued with an engaging PowerPoint presentation.
Richard was really open and friendly, interacting with us in a fun way talking about a rather serious topic - our future. In my opinion, the general subject Richard was aiming for was showing us how currently all that matters in the world of PR, and business in general as well, is creating and being a part of a community, providing either interesting or useful content that will intrigue the audience making them more interested in what you will say next. His words stuck with me and made me start question how I am going to shape myself as a PR person, soon to be a Master of Science in PR and this is why I feel now more than ever that it is in my power to shape my own future through my content and networking. The presentation had a very interesting slide:
I feel that these three guiding points represent the very essence of blogging itself, but also easily applicable to other similar tasks that PR practitioners need to perform every day. These principles are in fact a reflection of today's B2B and B2C strategies that have been proven to work from project to project.
Lastly, I just want to share two quotes by Richard - the first one is from the lecture: ''A blog is pure proof in practice - if you can do it for yourself, you can do it for a brand'' - something that professional PR bodies and agencies are looking for in students; and the second one I found on Richard's Twitter account:
Thank you for giving me additional spark of inspiration that will hopefully lead me to more improved and passionate blog posts! :-)
